Cyclists POV 39 – The Darkness / Spot The Cyclist / Hit & Run Driver / Friendly White Van Man

There’s been a few more subscribers lately so here’s another video!

Spot The Cyclist – Thankfully, most people have the sense to buy a light or two, even the cheapest of the cheap but see if you can spot this guy in the shadows. Dark clothes, dark bike and no lights. He’s asking for trouble!

Just A Quiet Ride Home – Until someone starts yelling out of there car for some reason… no idea who, or why.

Time To Find A New Route – This was the first evening I rode home after the clocks went back. I knew it would be dark down this road on my usual route but I didn’t expect how bad it would be. I’ve avoided that road every ride since. My main light was on full beam and the See Sense was going crazy as soon as it picked up a vehicles headlights. At least I was visible!

Bad Omens – Ambulance and Police out and about on my ride to work this morning. I should have known something would happen…

They Actually Hit Me! – KP06 HXM – This is the very first time I’ve actually made contact with a car. An extended clip with sound and a slow mo are at the end of the video. Well as you can see it was a nice bright morning. I have both lights on and I’m wearing a high vis jacket. The sun is in front of me so I’m lit up perfectly.

I was aware of the car in the side road but I wasn’t expecting the driver to pull out. It wasn’t a near miss. It was a hit. The driver was completely unaware and just carried on going. The rear passenger saw me and looks like they began to cover their face expecting me to end up through the window.

As luck would have it, I didn’t get knocked off and the bike wasn’t damaged. I turned my wheel just enough for the car to only clip it slightly. If it had been a split second later I would have been sent flying over the bonnet though.

The incident was reported to the Police. First impressions, the lady on the counter didn’t seem interested at all. When I explained someone had hit me, it was on video but I wasn’t hurt and my property wasn’t damaged she just gave me a blank look and by the tone of her voice you could see she wasn’t that bothered. I was asked to come back the evening after and have an appointment with one of their Officers.

The next evening I drove over and initially it seemed good. The Officer I spoke to said he was a cyclist too and had been knocked off earlier in the week in the same situation and it clearly seemed to anger him. He took all the details and looked at the footage but came back and said there’s no way they could ever get a prosecution for what he saw. Essentially, it was because the contact caused no damage and no injury. Hand on heart, I wasn’t after a prosecution, I only wanted to report it however the Officer said he’d go and visit the owner of the car and speak to them… scare them a bit, and get back to me.

That’s fine but that was the last I heard of it. I fully support the Police and know they have a tough job but in this case, I can see why some people don’t have any faith.

I haven’t actually seen the driver again. If I did, I’d like to have a word (and just a word, I’m not the violent type).

The 3 Speed Can’t Compete – When I’m out on my bike and see another cyclist, I automatically go into race mode and have to catch up. Unfortunately this time I was caught out on the tank and it just couldn’t keep up.

Letting The Faster Traffic Through – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Be courteous. I’m not perfect but if I get the chance to let a few cars by in a safe place, I will. It’s not the easiest road to overtake on.

White Van Man Returns The Favour – Following on from the last clip, when you’re in your car sat in traffic, it really doesn’t hurt to create a bit of room for a filtering cyclist / biker. I’d stopped behind the van initially because the gap looked like something even I wouldn’t chance but he was fully aware I was there and when he got the chance to mover forward, he created some room and waved me by. We both say thanks and carry on our journey. Peace on the road!

Pub Mural – This is a nice thing that a local pub has done recently. In honour of all those that have fallen and all those that continue to serve, they’ve dedicated a wall of their pub. It’s gotten a lot of respect from the town and I believe, even from the Nation.

Lastly, it’s dark and the weather is turning so be careful out there. It’s hard to find the motivation to ride in the dark and wet but always remember, the more you ride, the more pizza you can eat! That being said, invest in some proper lights and wear bright clothes!

Cyclists POV 35 – Hail To The Bus Driver / Shitty Cyclist

Knee brace on, lets see how long it lasts.

High Five – Because we’re a friendly bunch.

I See An Opportunity – A small uphill section is coming up so the chance to get a tow off the bus was welcome. Unfortunately the knee didn’t like it and started screaming at me when I hit 30mph or so.

Wave Him By – I see no point in holding the bus up. If I carry on riding in front, the bus struggles to get by and traffic gets held up. If I stop and let him by everything flows a bit easier. Common sense. Bus driver said thanks too.

Could Go Faster – Speed “trap” on a 30mph road. Not bad.

Playing Chicken Or Stupid? – Both I think. Some kids just want to show off to their mates. I’m not exactly one to back down though 😉

This Is My Lane Micra – My lane positioning was definitely encouraging the driver to pull up along side (I would normally try and get central) but still, most hold back. Seems like my legs have better acceleration this time.

He Waved Me By – At the junction before he’d taken a really, really wide route to provide room up the inside but I didn’t really fancy getting squished. Around the corner I stopped behind in traffic and he moved right over and I didn’t really see any point in going forward but he waved me through so… thanks!

Scrape The Pipes – Listen and watch for the lean.

Smooth Filtering – It’s nice when you get a good line like this that I can ride straight down the middle. I did notice that one lady was texting away on her phone after editing this video though… Not the first and won’t be the last.

Shitty Cyclist – Slow and cautious when filtering but feels it’s fine to ignore the lights changing and just after a red light shows. My wording at the end describes my feelings towards him.

Cyclists POV 33

Not uploaded one of these in a while. I’ve been a little distracted… Sorry!

Fixed Gear Fail – I’m 95% sure this incident ruined my fixed gear. I’m not sure how the wheel dislodged so violently; I didn’t hit a pot hole. After repairing it at the roadside and carrying on my journey the bike felt “different” and when I got to my destination I checked it over and found there was a definite lean to the rear wheel… I think the rear triangles are bent…

The Squeeze – It always seems to be this particular island. I don’t understand why some people feel the need to cut in so close when I’m taking my line and there’s a second empty lane. They didn’t get far. I followed them all the way down the road until they pulled over in a car wash….

More Observation Required – Not from me… from this person who, for some reason, decided to pull out and block off the exit.

Cyclist Wanker – Seriously, this guy, again. I get the cycle rage, I really do. Firstly he’s flying down the path and if someone had stepped out of one of the drives without looking…. well it would have hurt! Then to jump onto the road and squeeze passed… I just think this guy is a dick.

Water Hazard – Just your casual burst water main!

Wet Drain Covers – I almost stacked it here! It was raining, obviously, I was soaked, my brakes were near useless and I wanted to overtake but after checking and seeing the car I thought I’d let them go by first. What I didn’t see was the drain cover… My front wheel hit it and slipped out but somehow I didn’t go down.

At Least He Gave Me Space – Well, that’s it really. I was expecting to get squeezed out there but no. Impressed.

Queue Ahead, Failed Overtake – I laughed. It’s not hard to miss a line of cars queuing but they totally mis judged everything and had to pull back in behind.

– Everyone loves a slow mo classic –

Sneaky Biker – I didn’t even hear him filter up next to me! The first I knew was when I suddenly heard the bike accelerate. Ninja!

Another GoPro – I thought I was the only one around here!

Shit Hit The Fan – Clickbait / Troll 😛

Cyclists POV 32 – Wise Words

A lot of riding but an uneventful week! It’s the summer holidays so the roads are a lot quieter when I ride (which is awesome!) so there is a lot less drama!

Trying To Hit / Scare Me – BF60 VOY – The traffic behind was stopped for a red light, as was the traffic in front so after letting the Audi out, the Hyundai waved me across. Unfortunately the Corsa managed to squeeze passed at that precise moment but instead of being all grown up about the situation the driver decided to accelerate hard towards me, stopping just before hitting my rear wheel. The sound of the engine accelerating and I believe some tyre squeal is heard in the original video.

Right Turn / No Right Of Way – I have NO idea what this driver thought they were doing. As the lights turn green they just decided to cut across the oncoming traffic to make the turn instead of waiting. Fortunately both the first and second oncoming car were making a left turn but both gave the driver a blast of the horn.

Dog Wants To Play – I’m assuming play anyway as the tail was wagging!

Calf Cramp – The pain! Out of nowhere, the pain! I had to roll a good way down the road before I could pedal again 😦

I Like Her! – She was awesome. You can see I look back to check what the traffic is like before indicating and moving across but this lady has obviously seen that and held back to give me space even before I indicated. Brilliant.

Any Chance To Draft – If I see a lorry, I see a chance of easy, fast cycling. Lorries and buses are slow at accelerating and provide a good cover so get behind one and it’s fairly easy to do 30mph up a fair gradient.

Vans Are Good Too – The tall ones like this provide some good cover but van drivers generally accelerate a bit quicker so it’s harder to catch and maintain the draft. I held back and waited for the amber light before pedaling hard to get in the draft and it worked.

Bare Roads – Mid road works and the top surface had been stripped leaving all the drain covers and service covers raised. The bad thing was not all had been marked and they were pretty tall so it was causing everyone to swerve and avoid them.

THAT Cyclist – Remember, from the “Bloody Cyclists” video? Well here he is riding up the wrong side of a busy 40mph road. He should either be following the same route I take or riding on the path behind the bushes. This idiot makes up his own rules though and feels it’s ok to ride up that road the wrong way before crossing over to the right side obstructing all the traffic.

Wise Words – He’s right you know, there are a lot (or at least it seems) of idiot drivers but you need to make yourself seen! Wear bright clothing even in the day and don’t go out in the dark without high viz or lights. I’ve just bought a set of See.Sense lights and while they’re not in everyones price range they definitely make sure people see you! They’re expensive but worth the investment. I’ll do a video on them shortly.

Cyclists POV 31 – Extremely Close Call & Bus Drafting

That’s a fine looking Harley you have there Sir – What a bike. Gave the nod of appreciation, got one back. Score.

The Call Of A Taxi Driver – I didn’t expect the taxi to do a full loop of the island but I still wasn’t anywhere near to cutting him up. Still, I heard something shouted from the car. Can’t quite make out what though.

Trying To Block Me? – I find these people amusing. If he did actually look in his mirror and saw me, he was purposely riding the line down the centre of the road. I could have gone up the inside but I could just imagine him swerving over to block me. I only had to wait a few seconds for the road to clear before continuing…and he was still stuck in traffic.

See Me Indicating? – I checked behind (so I didn’t get my arm knocked off), indicated and luckily checked again because this driver just decided to come flying passed anyway.

This Actually Made Me Jump – Compared to other traffic, buses can be deceptively quite. It surprised me when they made the overtake, fairly close to me… and then I laughed when they continued to move over for the fresh air in front of me….

Van Cutting Corner – BJ58 EXD – The road had recently been “resurfaced” (which actually means throw down some tar and lots of loose stone and vehicles will do the rest) so there was lots of loose gravel. When I made that turn I thought I’d taken an un-natural line and hit the gravel but wasn’t entirely sure why until I looked back at the footage and saw the van was partially on the wrong side of the road.

Failing To Give Way – DN10 CKK – This boiled my blood. I was out on the Scorpio, finishing a test ride, making my way around this island when this absolute dickwad completely ignored my presence and missed me by inches. I think they did see me at the last second as a hand shot up in the window but they didn’t show any sign of remorse. A collision with that vehicle, at that speed could have killed me…

Slowly Pulls Out – I can do the speed limit down this road (30mph) but I need to keep my momentum going over this part so when this driver pulled out in front of me and then near enough stopped to make the next turn I wasn’t happy.

Audi Stereotype – So at this island it’s quite simply, right lane to go right, and left to go left. Most people want to go right so you end up having to wait for a small amount of second. Typical Audi driver doesn’t want to wait though and uses the left lane to cut out the wait and cut up anyone using the correct lane. What makes it even more laughable is they had forgot to secure the boot so it had popped open and they just carried on driving…

Braking For A Clear Island – Or should I saw braking particularly hard for a clear island. WHY?!

Smoked Out – I’d filtered passed most of the traffic and ended up behind this van. It wasn’t safe to try and make a pass so I sat behind me and as the traffic moved he booted it and I got a face full of smoke. He had to slow meters up the road though and pulled to the side to let me by with a big grin on his face. I took it as a joke, whether it was intended that way, who knows.

Polite – It can be a right nightmare to get out this junction sometimes but someone actually slowed traffic for me and allowed me out. How nice!

Watch For Cars Emerging – You might know they’re there but more often than not, they haven’t seen you.

Drafting Challenge – This road is a 40mph that goes into a 30mph. It was late evening with barely any traffic and when the bus stopped in front of me at the lights I knew I had a chance to steal a KOM. I’m not sure how well Strava reads speed because overlaying it on the video shows some fluctuation where there isn’t any but I definitely kept up with the bus. Unfortunately someone slow pulled out in front of the bus half way down the road and dropped it’s speed and I only placed 5th overall. I think the whole top 10 have been drafting for that leaderboard!

Cyclists POV 28

The “bonus” clip this week really pissed me off. You get some people that will turn in on you before an island thinking they can make it in front, but they normally leave enough room. This person however, decided to overtake in lane 2, which was empty, and then all of a sudden move back into lane 1 leaving me absolutely no room. I was so close to being knocked off! They didn’t even acknowledge me and when I rode passed and pointed to my head as a “THINK!” gesture I was completely ignored. The footage was posted on social media and got a fair amount of attention locally. Most were disgusted at the drivers actions but of course I got the blame from some delusional people. I haven’t seen the driver again…

Red Light Jump – HV08 HNF – Must have really been in a rush… or blind.

Up The Inside Is Dangerous – When people say cyclists should stick to the left, this is one example to be used against them. Not everyone checks their curb side mirror before pulling off. It felt like a close call, and was partly my fault. I shouldn’t have put myself in that situation but mirrors are there for a reason.

Close Pass – I know, I know. If you look at the last clip at see how close I was filtering to cars and compare it to this you’ll laugh and tell me to fuck off but considering the speed of that car, and that they didn’t even use the second lane, I’m saying that’s a close pass.

Great Place To Stop – Maybe the driver was picking something up, who knows, but stopping in that exact place, blocking off a set of traffic lights is pretty stupid.

Late Overtake – Thinking he could safely overtake and stop/make the left turn there was ridiculous. Especially if I had actually carried on riding.

Road Positioning – It’s a learner, yes, but whoever is teaching them should let them know you don’t stick to the left if you want to use the right lane. If you do, indicators would be a good thing to use.

SMIDSY – I don’t know what he was thinking but he held his hand up as an apology. If he’d kept on going it wouldn’t have just been me colliding with him… but the car coming the other way.

Troll Boss – Beeping and shaking his fist at me. When I heard the beeps I just thought, keep going and ignore them. Turns out it was just my boss having a laugh.

Who’s Walking Who? – That’s one excited dog!

‘Iya! – I misjudged the movement in the traffic here slightly so instead of cutting in front and holding the car back I waved them by so I could pull in. The grinning girl in the back made me laugh.

SMIDSY – DV14 AUE – See I’m not sure this was a “SMIDSY”. They MUST have seen me and just not cared I was there.

Strange Driving – I could hear the lorry behind me and kept waiting for it to overtake. It wasn’t until I looked at my rear cam I saw that he was straddling two lanes or blocking the second lane for most of the time. Random.

Cyclists POV 27

It’s roadworks season! They actually brought the town centre to a complete standstill one day. Several sets of road works in one place, combined with large amounts of lane closures for no reason meant traffic just stopped. Luckily I got through it all on two wheels no trouble 🙂

Super Close Pass – BD14CZF – I don’t normally mind cars using the same lane to pass so long as I’ve got some wiggle room / I’m not affected by the turbulence or it’s matching my speed but this cockwomble didn’t want to wait and passed me within inches at close to 40mph.

Red Light Jump – NC09PER – Had plenty of time to stop on amber but decided he was too important to wait. Gave him a thumbs up but got no reaction.

Super Considerate – I was more than happy riding in the empty (oncoming) lane but this lady saw me in her mirrors and gave me loads of room to ride back in the “correct” lane. Thanks!

Late Overtake – VA04MJU – The driver coming the other way was not happy at all. I was given plenty of room (thanks!) but it seems the van driver forced the oncoming car to hit the brakes.

Taxi – Obviously they have right of way…

Awkward Stop – I think I had clocked the car coming round, but it hadn’t registered straight away so the stop was very last second. I was definitely about to pull out…

Mobile Abuse – YP11DJF – Fitzpatrick Group – He didn’t even care. Not even trying to hide the fact he has a phone in his hand, held against his ear. Idiot. I see plenty of people sitting in traffic on their phones but he’s taking the piss.

Road Closed – I don’t think so. This is what caused all the gridlock in town. Lanes closed off with no work force on the road. They’d closed off one lane of the entire “ring road” to work on one small part of it. I was actually tempted to move the cones and let everyone through… Later on that evening all the cones had gone due the massive amounts of complaints the council had received from the public and businesses.

Setting a PB – I love it when things fall in to place like this. I saw the bus waiting to pull out and figured I could tuck in behind it for the hill after the island. Although I lost the tow towards the top I still smashed my PB but unfortunately only got 10th place on the Strava leaderboard!

Cyclists POV 21 & 22

Still lots of footage to go through! I quite like this editing lark though. The more I learn the less stressed I get. How is it for you viewers?

Just a short one this time. I don’t think I rode much this week.

– That island is badly planned. Three lanes in, two lanes on the island, three lanes out. Someone always gets cut up, it just happened I was obstructed from view.

– They really wanted me to move out the way so they could finish the overtake… Unfortunately I can’t move the traffic in front.

– Behind me at the island to turn right, pulls out behind me and then tries to dip up the inside. I always move over as soon as I’m passed that first exit to let cars by (like the blue car behind). They were just impatient…

– Filtering with a motorbike. I heard the guy coming so didn’t move out when I wanted and he offered for me to go first but seeing as he has the power I thought I’d let the motorbike lead. I’m just that little bit more agile to fit through the gaps though. The oncoming traffic had to stop at one point to let him through.

– And this is one of the reasons why cyclists need a bit of space. Some, like this gent, get tired and start to wobble around.

Song: Ryan Little – Sand Castles
http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Ryan_Little/Before_Dawn_II/06_Sandcastles

Early May…

– Now that’s a good driver. I indicated I wanted to turn right and despite having the chance to overtake me they acknowledged my signal and held back. Awesome.
– Cutting it fine was in reference to the overtake in this clip. I had to break to let them in. Meh
– This isn’t actually a bike lane. It’s a stretch of road that years ago ran two lanes side by side but someone deemed it too dangerous and limited the road to one lane thus creating a nice area to cycle in at the sides. It would be awesome if all roads had that space to cycle.
– Close pass. Well when a box of metal does pass you at 30+ mph it doesn’t feel nice.
– This happens a fair bit. Some drivers try and squeeze ahead of you before an island and when they realise there’s no space they either end up stradling two lanes or putting the squeeze on you.
– Overtaking on a solid white line, before a blind humpback bridge is never clever… Imagine if that car had been a little quicker…
– I never like having a large vehicle behind me so if I can pull in and wave them by I usually will.

Bonus Bad Bus Driver
Who knows what he was thinking! All the cars and me were indicating left but he still decided just to pull across and force his way in. Reported to the bus company. Not sure if anything happened.

Cyclists POV 19 & 20

Two videos for the price of one!

For the last month or so I’ve been following the vlogs of Casey Neistat. I found them after rewatching one of his viral videos in which he was ticketed for riding his bike not in the bike lane. I’m not really one to watch vlogs but his really caught my eye. His style and production of the vlogs really made me want to try out editing a bit more. That motivation, combined with the discovery of free music from Ryan Little (and my hard drive running out of space) has resulted in the last two evenings of me sitting down and trying out a couple of edits.

I’m now trying to work with the music and add colour and light corrections to the videos so hopefully you’ll see an improvement in quality.

#19 is just you’re standard weeks riding really but for #20 I encountered a bit of road rage. It’s posisble I was the spark but I wasn’t involved in the confrontation.

All this was from a week of weird weather in April. It was a pretty uneventful week apart from that one case of road rage. Here’s how it played out to me riding:

I saw the other cyclist filter to the front of two cars, bit of a dick thing to do but hey ho. As soon as the lights went green the two cars passed and I was able to gain quickly. I shoulder checked twice (but didn’t indicate) and pulled out to overtake. Next thing I hear is the car behind honking and all of a sudden the driver pulls in front of me on a clear road and hits the brakes. I zip up the inside, muttering under my breath and carry on.

When I got to work I decided to check the rear cam to see how close the car was to me. I saw it wasn’t that close but found out why the driver reacted so badly. The cyclist I was passing decided to give the old “wanker” gesture after the driver beeped me, which I’m guessing the driver saw and that’s why they pulled in front of me and hit the brakes. The angry cyclist then races to catch up and hits the car, at least once. Further down the road they both come to a stop.

I sent the footage in to a local news page in case anyone needed it and the driver behind the car and cyclist fighting it out go in touch to say it all got a bit heated and nasty as they stopped. Apparently the driver slammed on the brakes an the cyclist went into the back of the car. What happened after that, I don’t know but two angry road users certainly met that day!

I’ve got a lot more footage to go through so there probably will be a few more posts coming up! I’m trying to fit it all in between the two hours of riding I do a day, work and all my projects at home so I’m feeling pretty busy right now!

Cyclists POV 18

Two videos to share with you this week. First up is another “POV” video:

I’m getting out on the bike more and more now trying to get the old body back in shape so the amount of footage is building. Unfortunately it’s not all drama like I know a lot of people want to see. The old cyclist vs car war isn’t all that apparent when you’ve got some common sense and a camera clearly visible. Honestly since fitting it to my helmet people really seem to be more cautious when passing you etc. I get some funny looks riding around but I’m enjoying it. OK so the odd “incident” might happen but it’s rare. I just like to share the things I find interesting.

Thanks again to Ryan Little for producing some great free music!

The second video is from my ride to work this morning. It wound me up so much. As I’m approaching the island, with less than 100m to go I notice a car passing in the second lane. It’s quiet, the island is free, it’s safe to use both lanes to continue on to the next section which has two lanes. What I didn’t expect was the driver to suddenly swing back into my lane before the island, closing the gap and slowing down quickly. There was no need for it. The driver was completely oblivious to what they’d done and just drove on. I passed them again 500m down the road but still got no recognition or sorry.

The video has been shared on a local “new” page and while many comments are saying how bad the driving is, there are still others who shift the blame on to me, saying there was plenty of space and the driver was just getting back in their lane. While I watch the video back everything seems a bit slower and of course I can see ways out of it but in the moment everything happens so quick. I believe it’s only 5 second from first seeing the car pass until they’ve completely cut me up but that’s ok apparently. I wonder how many would think it was ok if I went out in my car and did the same move on them…

Stay safe out there!
